The 23rd New Directions in Film Studies in Turkey (TFAYY) Conference will be held on May 9-11, 2024 with the theme of “Cinema and Beyond”. This year, the conference, which will be hosted by Kadir Has University’s Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, will cover the concept of post-cinema; new technologies and new forms, transformation of cinematic language, expanding/expanded cinema, post-cinema audience, games, interactive documentaries and online worlds, and will cover today’s most controversial issues that shed light on cinema’s complicated relationship with new technologies and different art forms. The video essays in the program will also allow us to take a closer look at this redefining cinematic narrative. Cinema and beyond, which will be addressed on the axis of many technological changes from interactive experiences to virtual reality, will be discussed in both Turkish and English in seven academic sessions.
The two main speakers of the three-day conference, who have made their names known with their work on post-cinema, are New York University faculty member Marina Hassapopoulou and director Deniz Tortum. In addition, on the second day of the conference, a session will be held on the project titled “Positioning the Spectator in Cinematic Virtual Reality” conducted by KHAS Radio, Television and Cinema Department faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melis Behlil, who also determined this year’s theme. This work was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) with Project No. 121K238. We would like to thank TÜBİTAK for its support of the project.
TFAYY XXIII Conference was supported by the General Directorate of Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey.
